Don’t start by buying a new bulb
A flickering headlight is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Before replacing anything, pay attention to two details: when the flicker happens and whether it affects one side or both. Those observations can quickly narrow the problem toward the bulb or local connection, the vehicle's electrical supply, or compatibility after an LED upgrade.
The 5-minute isolation test
With the vehicle parked safely, note the pattern before taking anything apart:

Test 1: Does the symptom follow the bulb?
If the same bulb design is fitted on both sides and access is straightforward, exchange the left and right bulbs. If the flicker moves with the bulb, the bulb or its integrated LED driver becomes the more likely area to inspect. If the flicker stays on the original side, shift attention to the socket, connector, ground path, or local wiring.
Do this only with the lights switched off and the assembly cooled down. Never pull a connector by its wires.
Test 2: Does it change with engine speed?
Start the vehicle and watch the lights at idle, then again with a modest increase in engine speed. If both beams brighten, dim, or pulse together as RPM changes - or when the A/C, rear defroster, or blower is switched on - the charging system deserves attention.
Test 3: Inspect the physical connection
· Make sure the bulb is fully locked into the housing.
· Check that the plug is seated squarely and that its terminals have not been pushed back.
· Look for moisture, green corrosion, heat discoloration, or a damaged seal.
· Confirm that the LED driver module and cooling fan are not pinched by the dust cap or loose against moving parts.
A loose terminal can behave like a tiny on-off switch over bumps. Corrosion can also raise resistance and turn a minor connection issue into intermittent operation.
Why LEDs can reveal a problem that halogens did not
LED replacement bulbs use electronic drivers and draw power differently from halogen filaments. Some vehicles also use bulb monitoring or pulse-width-modulated signals that a particular LED driver may interpret as unstable input. If the flicker began only after the LED upgrade, verify the exact bulb size, installation, and vehicle fitment before assuming the vehicle itself is faulty.
On compatible applications, an appropriate anti-flicker module, decoder, or relay harness may help. These are not universal fixes. Adding components before locating the cause can hide a connection or charging problem instead of solving it.
When to stop troubleshooting at home
Have a qualified technician inspect the vehicle if you see a battery warning, repeated blown fuses, heat damage, exposed wiring, water inside the lamp, or flickering across several electrical systems. Those signs go beyond a normal bulb replacement.
